Denon AH- GC20 globe cruiser noise cancelling travel headphones 40 mm drivers : they are super nice and easy to

I was really impressed with the sound quality and overall build of the headphones, however there was a large amount of sound leakage that made the headphones unsuitable for daily use. As well as this the active noice cancelling had little effect in eradicating constant background noise.

The recipient said they were excellent. It seems these headphones are one of the very few that offer noise cancelling and blue tooth.

Build quality really really good and very comfy. Been listening mainly via bluetooth. Well i have not tested how long it lasts but it is long. I can easily believe 20+ hours with bluetooth and noise cancelling on. Niose cancelation works great. Not the finest around but then again for the price it is what i would expect.

Comfortable and good quality headphone. Just had it for a couple of days. Now i can keep my noise for my self (doom+blackmetal).

Come in a nice case with all relevant accessories.

I’ve used the denon ah-gc20 for nearly 2 years now. I usually don’t like to rate things but i’ve decided to share my experience as i’ve wasted a lot of time testing other headphones. I’ve found denon to be reliable and well built. I cannot compare the anc to sony or bose but other than that the ah-gc20 are excellent for music and calls. You don’t get the fancy firmware upgrade either, but i never missed that as the ah-gc20 performed excellent from the first day until now. I’ve tried to upgrade recently to wh-1000xm2 and after to qc35 ii. Both have big issues with the calls. Unless i was in a quiet place the other person couldn’t hear me properly, plus i could hear myself in the headphones, somehow the ambient sound was activated on both pairs. It looks like there are many reports online of the same issue, just search for the name + noisy calls. I’ve tried resetting them, firmware upgrade but nothing worked.

Firstly, let me put this review in context: i wanted a set of bluetooth and active noise cancelling headphones for “general” use with my iphone, eg when working at home, walking into town and back, when shopping at the supermarket etc, and for the occasional long bus/train journey or flight (maybe a few times a year). The noise cancelling was more for the latter, but i didn’t want to shell out on 2 separate sets and preferred the convenience of one “do it all”, accepting there’d be some compromise. They typically get used a couple of times a week on average. I do not use them for commuting daily, or for sport, and i’m not interested in the phone call functionality (it’s a useful feature, but the quality wasn’t important to me). I do appreciate a good quality sound; i am a musician but am no audiophile, and i must confess the mp3s i usually listen to (mostly of the rock/blues/pop variety) are only 128kbps. These were my first headphones of this type, and were to replace my bose in-ear phones that are about 8 years old now. I should also say i’m a glasses wearer – of the oakley design where the arms curve outwards from the head – which has seriously affected the fit/comfort of some headsets (particularly aviation headsets) in the past. I “narrowed” it down to about 6 different sets, including beats studio wiresless, parrot zik (2. 0), plantronics backbeat pro, sony mdr-zx770bn, sennheiser momentum wireless 2, and these. Bose were discounted as they don’t have a set that’s both wireless and nc.

Build quality: plastic brace breaks too easily which means the ear pieces fit less snugly on the head. Metal brace then is free to bend, making it worse. Construction means one or the other ear cup can be folded into the brace, leaving the other exposed to movement. When worn around neck both cups are turned forwards meaning the hard surface rests on collarbones and cups are exposed to the surroundings. During charging of the internal battery, interference noise ruins audio.

One of the best sounding and the most comfortable wireless headphones available on the market. I am vary happy with this purchase.

If you are after a set of over ear headphones (cans) then look no further. . Take and make calls (check). . Awesome sound quality (check). After searching and trying on different brands in the same price bracket, nothing comes close to the denons. As you’d expect, build quality is exceptional. They come with all the adapters, and very sturdy packing case, and should 20 hours of battery life (i’ve had 22 hrs) not be enough for you, you can always use the supplied cable. Best tech investment to date by far.

5 stars from here, they are super nice and easy to use.

Very nice headphones, that covers a lot of great functions, like bluetooth and noise cancelation. Pros: the sound quality is good, i think. The bluetooth is functioning effortless and the battery time is impressive. Cons: the noise cancelation is not that impressive, and can’t be compared to bose. But the biggest problem with them is that they are leaking so much sound, unfortunately.

Really great quality for the price. Sound quality is perfect for me. I love to have alot of bass, and this delivers. Also while the noise cancelling is not 100%, it is more than good enough. I can really use this and not get distracted by noises. Even in traffic when out walking they work great. The comfort of the pads are top notch, though as my ears stick out a bit, the inside of the speakers lightly touch them at times, which can lead to annoyances over time. The battery time is amazing, and i can use them all day long without having to worry running out. I have even stopped carrying a backup headset so i can continue listening to music. It can even pair with my tv, so i can truly listen to movies in private.

Firstly, i want to say that i’m not an audiophile but i did do a lot of research before choosing to buy these headphones. I compared reviews from non-paid websites from audiophiles who compared the bose quietcomforts, the beats studios and many more to these headphones. Apparently the beats are just a brand name (rather like buying an audi or bmw for the badge and supposed prestige) and don’t actually offer anywhere near the quality of these or boses, and cost a lot more as well. They look high quality when you open the box. They headphones are smooth matte black on the outside and look expensive, and they come with a nice, high quality internal fabric case to keep them in which doesn’t let them slide about inside due to two fabric protrusions that the folded headset can fit onto. The ah-gc20s are charged with a micro-usb cable (provided) and take a good 3 hours + to charge them to full. No decent manual is provided so you have to go on the denon website / google for the pdf of the manual (the last time i tried to access the manual on the main denon site it gave a 404). Bluetooth is turned on / off by holding down the play/pause button for 3 seconds plus until the headset beeps and a blue light comes on / off. There’s also the sound cancelling switch on the right hand side so make sure you turn both of these off after listening or the battery will drain over night. I find that once you get to know where the buttons are, they’re easy to reach for and find.

Noice canceling is also working good. The separate nc on/off could have been solved better, but besides that, all fine.

Have returned item as when operated using wire connection and noise cancelling turned off ie as you would with low batteries, the sound is very muffled. Contacted denon for advice they said ‘the integrated amplifier in these headphones is tuned for optimum quality when using noise cancelling and bluetooth. When using cable we recommend a high quality headphone amplifier for superior audio quality’ so have now bought sennheiser m2 aebt momentum wireless units, twice the price but faultless.

Very pleased with the sound. Bluetooth works fine – even sound through bt is satisfactory. Nc is not as the one on bose, but still very good. Need to try plane adaptor though.

Brilliant set of headphones, extremely comfortable for hours on end and all range of sounds are perfect. (unless your hearing is anal). Battery life is extremely long and bluetooth works for over 20 mdr between walls. Nc is ok for background noise but you can’t have everything. Denon’s work great with the supplied jack cable if and when the power eventually run out of the battery.

Living up to the expectations. Noice cancelling worked perfect on an airplane. Almost a little scary to remove all outside noise not notising if someone approaches you. Haven’t run out of battery yet. A little tighter than expected but not problematic. Removed one star due to the somewhat tight fit but could as well have been 5 stars. Due to brexit these came very cheap compared to danish prices.

*edit* dropped this review down from 4 star to 3 after a few months of use and getting extremely frustrated with the beeping sound that you hear when the battery allegedly hits 20-30%. Too many wannabe career reviewers writing overly positive reviews on amazon. So here’s a tad more objectivity. Broad clear sound stage, bass is well constructed with no distortion. Automatically they could have been given 5* for this alone. However they fall down on build quality and usability. Build quality – the last few generations of denon headphones have been of very poor build quality. At this price point you can’t really complain, especially with the superior sound quality. That being said the plastic prongs that hold the ear cups are prone to cracking.

(for me) the headset is comfy and much the best at cutting out outside distractions for me. The headset paired very simply with my apple watch and ipad and connectivity has always been seamless even when the source is away from the headset when i move around. The case for the headphones is robust and functional keeping a good product safe and tidy. It holds it’s charge for a really long time but is a simple process, and not to long, to recharge. Very happy with my purchase and now i can enjoy my music or listen to my program on the ipad in peace when everyone else around is listening to theirs.

  1. 1.0 out of 5 stars Hated the size and bluetooth - go small and with wires for me says:

Maybe it is me but i got on with these so badly that i sold them on ebay. I have had hundreds of headphones for different parts of my life. I used to have the sennheiser noise cancelling but i think i lost them after years so i had a try with these. My main gripes were the complicated bluetooth stuff and the turning noise cancelling on and off. Also – they are massive and i just couldn’t make room for them in my travel bag. I have massive monitor headphones at home which are great and sennheiser over the ear for travel (p100). I hated turning bluetooth on and then noise off and the other way round. Headphones are a personal thing and for me i didn’t like the huge size and the complicated bluetooth. I know this hasn’t been the best review (my others are usually more positive) but i would beware these personally.

I’ve been after these headphones now for over a year but could not justify the price. Homework done but could not find many reviews but decided to go for it. The headphones constantly make a buzzing noise through both earpieces while there’s power in the battery and stop playing audioplaying cod on ps4, and suddenly it stops with a really loud continuous beep sound (it hurts), and the headphones are completely dead, and i can’t switch them off, the beep continuous sounding. It does not respond any buttonthe vacuum effect when using these headphones is horrible;headphones packed and on the way back to amazonmy over ear headphone hunt continues. I own beats solo 1 (purchased 2012) they still work, but i was hoping to upgrade for under £200, refuse to go any higher. Bose are my favourite, but i can’t do it.

I am delighted with these headphones, having read the reviews and then tried, sony, bose and sennheiser, i felt that not only were these the best value for money, but for me the best overall. The bose on paper were the best and the reviews supported this, but when i tried some in bose store i did not see, feel or hear the benefit or could justify the additional £s. They felt light and with poor quality plastics, the switches were fiddly and they did not sound any better, in fact for my ears, they sounded inferior. The sennheiser were just too expensive and way to complicated, even the assistant in the shop struggled with them and complained about the ‘logic’ with the switches. But to the denons, it felt like opening an iphone box, they are so well packaged. The instructions were easy to follow to set up and pair and they sound fantastic. The build quality and touch and feel are like holding a work of art, brilliant. Used them for around 4 hours non stop yesterday and they were a delight to wear and the sound quality for me was great, the noise cancelling worked well and manged to cut out the tv which others were watching whilst i caught up with motor sport on the ipad. Took several calls from my iphone and that worked well, yes, the quality is not the same as listening to music or tv, but it was fine and i could hear the other party and they could hear me – which is all that matters. The carry case is also a work of art and protects the headphones and there is small carry case the the wires, well thought through.

  7. 2.0 out of 5 stars Painful wearing experience makes these Denons a disappointment despite cinematic sound quality says:

This review is from : Denon AH- GC20 globe cruiser noise cancelling travel headphones 40 mm drivers, bluetooth, mic audio/charger cable, airplane adapter, transport box black/silver

This review comes on the eve of the 12 month anniversary of my purchase of these denon headphones, ostensibly for use while travelling on aircraft. The quality of construction is high, with delightful die cast aluminium hangers setting the denon’s apart from other more expensive competitors where plastic, sometimes described as ‘glass reinforced’, seems to be the norm (and which experience suggests doesn’t provide the durability you would expect from so called premium audio products). The bluetooth listening experience from the denons is also very good. I pair mine with an ipad air 2, and find the sound reproduction to be enveloping, with clear voices and a powerful midrange teamed with titanic, but tightly controlled, bass. In fact, the only way to describe the bass sound reproduction achieved by these headphones is cinematic. As for the noise cancelling, you only realise how effective it is if, while travelling by plane, you remove the headphones and are exposed to the full roar of the engines and passing air. Sadly however, these positives are outweighed by some serious negatives. The biggest is the fact that the headphones are unbelievably uncomfortable, to the extent that they must have be modelled on medieval devices of torture. The inner area of each ear cup is covered by a thin, unpadded nylon fabric, which means that when in place the components inside the ear cups cut into your ears.

Now let me tell you that i am not a newbie in headphones but not an audiophile either. Have tried from cheap ones all the way to bw p7 and beoplay h6 (sure there are more expensive ones). As a hifi company i was expecting something great from denon, at least on par with the mm300 that i currently own but the bass in the gc20 is just way too much. My head is rattling and aching and i feel like one of those desperate teens back in the days buying the beats just for that stupid bass. And because of this bass it’s hard to focus on the other sound stages, everything is succumbed by the bass. They are good comfort wise but they leak quite some sound above 50%. You do not want anyone near you at 100% volume. Did i complain enough about the bass?. No matter nc on or off, bt on or off.

Straight out of the box listing to music via smart phone is excellent pending what genre of music your listening to so i decided to download the denon travel app for smart phone and thats when things changed. . You have full control now of the cans to fine tune them for your musical needs. . I use the live stage mode with a few tiny tweaks and that is perfect for me. The lows to the highs and the vocals are perfect. I close my eyes and feels like the person is in the room singing to me. . Yes you do notice a slight difference with noise cancelling on or off but nothing major now altered settings. . Bluetooth connectivity excellent. Noise cancelling not perfect but does make a huge difference.

One of the earpieces came away after 9 months’ use. I presume fatigue had caused the hinge clip retainer moulding to break away. Thankfully, good old sugru came to hand to fix them. I expected a lot more from denon. They sound great but they are heavier than the equivalent bose and nowhere near as comfortable. I won’t buy this brand again. They are designed to look robust but sadly it looks like corners have been cut.

  20. 4.0 out of 5 stars very comfy, low frequencies are a bit too much, easy to optimize with my music app... I like it! says:

Yes i like it – the sound is absolute ok and with equalizer you can change all characters you like. I for myself took out base frequencies which are lightly to strong with standard settings. What i don’t like that much is the noise cancelling. But all sounds are still present when music is not playing that loud. There is my sure se 425 (passively isolated) much, much better. Anyway, i also tested bose qc35 (wireless over ears) in our local electronic store. So i think there is no better choice, but for the denon, much nicer crafting (metal instead of plastics). Finally, i would say it uses to be nice, is used at home, but i can imagine that i will take it with me when i am on holidays as well.

    • 5.0 out of 5 stars So comfy says:
These are the most comfortable headphones i ever had. I even fell asleep with themthe sound is – as some stated – a bit on the bass side. But with neutron music player (app) you can tweak it to your likings. The build quality is superb and as i said, you won’t even know you have them on. The control buttons work perfectly on my blackberry q10 which supports aptx. These are the only denon over-the-ear hp with aptx, as far as i know. But you can check it yourself:[. ][or google aptx, click on products, headphones and filter by brand]the case smelled a little at first but that is gone by now. I can definetly recommend these, especially for under 200 bucks.

    • 5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant look, strong built, superb quality! says:
Despite of reading some negative comments about this headphone i decided to give it a go. I had the previous ah800 which i used for 5 years. It had plastic band and a metal housing. The plastic strap got broken all over the place after a year of usge but the sound quality of it was phenomenal so i just used electric tape to keep it together. Anyways when i’ve seen that this new model is out and built from metal i got very excited. Initially i was thinking of getting the bose qc35 but then i decided that superior sound quality is more important that superior noise canceling for me. Also denon’s price drop made this item more desirable considering the 110 pounds difference. The sound quality is amazing. Everything is crystal clear. It can be said that the base is strong but to be honest i like it.

Bought these for hubby as i have bose ones (which i think are far superior) but he likes them for the bluetooth connectivity. He says the sound isn’t as great as my bose (to be expected) and his only gripe is that they take longer to fully charge than the three hours stated.
